Documentaries on the Garos of NE India Nandini Bedi lived in the Garo
hills from 1999-2001. This gave her a chance to observe the life of the
Garos in intimate ways. Her films try to capture the realities of their
day-to-day existence, rather than present them as the "exotic". Her
documentary "Ambi Jiji's retirement" (23 min, PSBT) won the First
Prizes at the Vatavaran Festival 2007, and the Jeevika South Asian
Livelihood Festival 2007. As Ambi Jiji approaches retirement, her world
has irrevocably changed. Traditional multi-crop jhum cultivation has
been replaced by private ownership of land, and mono-culture orchards.
The resultant loss of diversity is not just biological but also social
and cultural. The other film, "Notes on Man Capture" (48 min) looks
at the ritual of kidnapping a bridegroom from a neighboring village. It
follows the story of a single mother Ratmi, as the village tries to
capture a man for her. In a society that is matrilineal, hierarchies and
practices can be refreshingly different! About the film-maker
Nandini Bedi has a Diploma in Cinema Studies from the FTII, Pune. She is
currently based in Amsterdam, where she lives with her anthropologist
husband and two children. She is particularly passionate about women's
issues. Nandini will be here on the 3rd January for a discussion after
the film. For more details on her filmography and films, visit
